Manual Handling.

Manual handling is a common aspect of construction work but carries significant risks if done improperly. Tasks like lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects can lead to musculoskeletal injuries, which are among the most frequent workplace injuries. Understanding proper techniques is crucial for preventing harm.

Factors Influencing Risk

  • The size, shape, and weight of the load.
  • Hand placement and grip.
  • The position of the load relative to the body.
  • Twisting, bending, or repetitive motions during the task.
  • The number and frequency of lifts performed.

Safe Lifting Principles

  • Plan Ahead: Assess the load and clear your path before lifting.
  • Use Mechanical Aids: Whenever possible, use trolleys, hoists, or other equipment to reduce physical strain.
  • Ask for Help: Don’t attempt to lift heavy or awkward loads alone.
  • Lift with Your Legs: Keep your back straight and bend at the knees. Hold the load close to your body to maintain balance and reduce strain.
  • Avoid Twisting: Turn your whole body instead of twisting your back while carrying a load.

Best Practices

  • Do: Place feet hip-width apart, get a good grip, and lift smoothly.
  • Don’t: Lift without assessing the load or carry objects over long distances.
