Working Safely

at Heights.

Falls from heights are a leading cause of injury and fatalities in construction. Following safety protocols is essential to protect yourself and your co-workers -when standards slip, accidents happen.

Working at heights requires strict adherence to safety guidelines, proper equipment use, and protective gear. While these tips offer important advice, always follow your company’s specific procedures and Australian safety standards to keep everyone safe and injury-free.

What’s the danger?

The risks involved in working at heights include falls, equipment failure, and improper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). These dangers can result in severe injury or death if not managed properly.

Key hazards include:

  • Falls from ladders, scaffolds, or elevated platforms.
  • Faulty or overloaded equipment.
  • Failure to wear appropriate PPE.

Myth vs Fact

Myth = “I’ve done this job a hundred times, I don’t need to check the equipment.”

Fact  = Equipment failure can happen at any time. Regular inspections are crucial to prevent accidents.

Myth = “I don’t need to wear my PPE for quick tasks.”

Fact  = PPE is vital for every job, no matter how short or familiar the task. Always wear your protective gear.

Top safety tips

Check Equipment

Inspect all equipment, including ladders, scaffolds, and machinery, to ensure it’s in good condition and meets safety standards. Don’t overload or use damaged equipment, as it puts everyone at risk.

Inspect PPE

Always check helmets, harnesses, visibility vests, and work boots before use. Ensure your PPE fits properly and is free from damage, as it’s critical for fall prevention and overall safety.

Calculate Fall Distance

When using harnesses, calculate the fall distance by considering the worker’s height and the slack in the harness. This ensures that the fall protection system is effective and prevents serious injuries.

Follow the Safety Plan

Please be sure to stick to established safety procedures and never cut corners. Everyone from management to workers must adhere to the safety plan to reduce risks and prevent on-site accidents.
